Mentoring Policy and Procedure

Guide for Mentors and Mentees

WHAT

The mentoring will be based on the  aims, objectives, and benefits stated in the project outline. For mentors new to mentoring an international student, the following article may be helpful:

• Why does mentorship matter for international student success?

WHAT IT IS NOT

• Counseling or Therapy: Mentors are not therapists; they provide guidance, not emotional or psychological intervention.
  
• A One-Way Street: Mentoring is not just about the mentor giving advice—it’s a collaborative relationship where both parties learn and grow.
  
• A Short-Term Fix: Mentoring is not a quick solution to challenges; it's a process that develops over time.
  
• Micromanaging: Mentoring is not about controlling decisions but empowering the mentee to make their own.
  
• A Friendship Alone: While mentors and mentees may become friends, the primary focus remains on personal and professional development.
  
• About Doing the Mentee’s Work: Mentors guide and advise, but they don’t do tasks or solve problems for the mentee.
  

WHEN

• Mentoring can commence as soon as  a match has been successful.
• This project concludes in June 2026.
• Mentoring sessions will occur at a suitable time and frequency negotiated between student and mentor.

WHO

• Every attempt will be made to match students and mentors according to professional  disciplines, otherwise the match will match based on  mentor availability.
• Mentors and students will be matched    according to their gender.

WHERE

• Sessions can occur in person at Dixon House during operating hours, or in person at a public place such as a cafe or library, or online via video conferencing.

HOW / HOW MUCH

• Total number of sessions are based on the goals of the mentee, with 3 sessions being the minimum.
• Sessions should last for approximately an hour.
• What is covered in the sessions is up to  the needs of the student.  It is advisable to have a plan at the start of each session of what is to be covered, as well as   a review of previous sessions  and the tracking of progress.
